BobCat Fully Functional

Posted December 10, 2009 by liblink

BobCat and BobCatStandard are now fully functional.

Users are able to sign-in, see their e-shelf, view their “library account”, place holds, recalls and offsite requests, and renew materials.

At this point we are still a little behind registering all of the check-ins and check-outs that occurred while BobCat was not fully functional. But we did not want to hold up full access while we input that information. As a result, users checking “my library account” may find that it is not fully current, since we are behind with registering books you may have returned or checked out during this period. Since we have not yet fully caught up with every transaction that has occurred, you may also find that the status of some books is not correct. We recommend that if a book states that it is available and you are unable to locate it on the shelf, that you complete a quick search request. Conversely, if it indicates it is checked out, you might want to double check the shelf, just in case. This only affects a very small number of books, and we anticipate that we’ll be caught up within the next day or two.

Thanks for your patience during this very difficult time when BobCat was not fully functional. Our apologies for the difficulties and inconvenience that it brought about for you all. We’ll keep you informed about follow-up work.

BobCat Status Update

Posted December 2, 2009 by liblink
Categories: Uncategorized

We are continuing to restore the BobCat functionalities that were lost during the Thanksgiving weekend as a result of mechanical problems. We anticipate that full functionality will be restored by Wednesday, December 2.

You can use BobCat to perform and refine searches, locate call numbers, see the basic record for an item and link to e-resources.
Items can be temporarily saved in the guest e-shelf for emailing, printing, or sending to RefWorks, but will be deleted when you end your session.

The following BobCat functionalities and services are unavailable:

  • Item status information, i.e., whether a book is available or checked out
  • Online renewal (There is a 50 day grace period for renewals. You can also bring the books in to the library and renew in person.)
  • Place requests for recalls and holds
  • Sign in to see: My Library Account, your tags, personal e shelf
Your personal e-shelf – Items are still there, but unavailable for viewing at this time
  • “Copies in Library” information returns incomplete information
  • BobCatStandard is also unavailable at this time.

We apologize for this outage and appreciate your patience.

Help us kick off a new school year by joining us at our Annual Graduate Student Reception. It is a great opportunity to meet your subject librarian, as well as mingle with your fellow graduate students over some complimentary food and drinks. We will be giving away NYU Bookstore gift certificates to three lucky attendees. The reception will take place:

–> Thursday, September 17th, 6:00-8:00, 6th floor North Reading Room, Bobst library

Please RSVP by going to http://library.nyu.edu/grads

We are also offering a series of Graduate Student-focused workshops, where you can learn everything from how to organize your bibliographies, to how to track down those tricky citations, to how to be a more effective research assistant (and much more). For the complete listing of these sessions, and to sign up, go to:

As a new or returning Graduate Student at NYU, you should know that we have been working hard over the past two years to expand and improve our services and spaces to fit your needs, and we hope you’ll help us keep improving.

We look forward to meeting you and wish you the best of luck this semester!

New Database Page on Libraries’ Web

There is a new improved way to access the Libraries’ electronic resources!

We have reorganized the “Articles via Databases” page on the Libraries’ website to include many discipline-specific categories to assist you with your research. By using these categories, you will see recommended databases and electronic resources selected by the Libraries’ selectors. In many cases, you will also be able perform a combined (federated) search of these databases.

If you do not pick a category, the default is “General Search,” which searches Proquest, Wilson Omni and JSTOR.

The A-Z list of databases has been enhanced with detailed descriptions.
The list of “popular databases” has been made more prominent.

Access the new page by choosing the Articles via Databases link on the Library homepage, http://library.nyu.edu or by going directly to http://arch.library.nyu.edu.

Additional new features, which will be included in Library workshops in the Fall, include saving and exporting individual citations, searching and sorting by self-labeled citations, and creating sets of federated databases to both search and embed in any web page.

A questions / comments link is available for your feedback.

Service Interruptions at Bobst Sat. July 18

Posted July 17, 2009 by liblink
Categories: Bobst

There will be a service interruption at Bobst this Saturday, July 18. It will only affect the lower levels and the first floor. Here is the detail.

Due to the lower level construction:

– Electrical power will be unavailable on Lower Level 1 from 7am – 4pm — computer classrooms and computers on this floor only will be unavailable

– Internet and BobCat access (including wireless) will be unavailable from 2-4 pm on the Lower Levels and the first floor

All the floors will remain open, but you may want to consider using another area in Bobst Library for your work. What this means for you:

1. If you were planning on using one of the computer classrooms or computers on Lower Level 1 you’ll need to check out a laptop from the computer center. Laptops can be used throughout the library and have internet access as well as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

2. If you were planning on plugging in your own laptop on Lower Level 1, you’ll need to relocate to another floor in Bobst.

3. If you need access to BobCat or the Internet from 2-4pm, you’ll need to use a computer on floors 2-4

We apologize for any inconvenience.
